KALAMAZOO, MI —Thornapple Creek Golf Course has closed its doors for the last time and is auctioning off its assets and equipment.
The business, which announced last spring that it would be sold and planned to close, stopped operating as a golf course on Nov. 5.
The 194-acre property, which is northwest of Kalamazoo on F Avenue in Alamo Township, is to be converted for private use by members of the Daniel Scheffers family. Scheffers is owner of VanDam & Kruisinga Building and Restoration.
Assets of the course and all its equipment are to be liquidated in a one-day online auction via Orbitbid.com, a division of Miedema Asset Management Group.
The one-day online auction will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 28, via Orbitbid.com. According to information provided by the Miedema Asset Management Group, the sale will start at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
Thornapple Creek Golf Course catered to golf leagues, outings, groups and open play since it opened in 1981. The lush golfing facility, which has a log cabin clubhouse and other facilities, was also used over the years to host many weddings, receptions, business functions, showers, high school proms, reunions and other gatherings.
The lush, 18-hole course had a wooded and rolling landscape and was built by businessmen who were later linked to a multimillion-dollar drug-trafficking network in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Two of the original owners were convicted of drug offenses in 1985, and a third became a fugitive of the law.
The U.S. Department of Justice seized the course in 1986 and sold it at auction a year later.
Longtime owner John Brussee said he had not been aggressively looking to sell the course, but decide to sell after receiving a good offer. He said golf remains popular but operating a golf course has become a tough business as fewer people are playing.
Assets that are to be sold in Tuesday’s auction include mowers, a loading tractor, maintenance carts, a leaf vacuum and various other pieces of equipment used in the care and upkeep of such a facility. Also for sale is a full range of commercial kitchen and bar equipment, catering equipment, restaurant tables and chairs, bar stools, sound and lighting equipment, patio seating, a walk-in cooler, and maintenance tools and machinery.
Any of the auction items may be seen on the orbitbid.com web sit or by clicking at Thornapple Creek Golf Course.
