Charity Golf Day at Elea confirmed – Cyprus Mail

St Michael’s Hospice Charity (SMHC) is delighted to announce that their first golf tournament to raise funds in support of Archangel Michael Hospice will take place on the morning of Wednesday December 13th with 14 confirmed teams.

Charity Chairman Andrew Lauder requested seasoned golfer and SMHC member, Barrie Hattam, to contact all clubs across the island inviting teams of four to sign up for the tournament.

Teams entered include The Mad Batters from the Paphos Golfers Association who claim Elea as their home course; The Par Tee Boys from Armou golfing community; The OddJobs including two players from Pissouri; The Old’n Not So Bold from Episkopi and The Flamingos from Akrotiri.

Players’ nationalities include Cypriot, English, Scottish and South African and all the prestigious clubs like Minthis Hills, Secret Valley and Elea have submitted players.

The organisers confirmed; ‘It promises to be an interesting day as the Elea course is a challenging Sir Nick Faldo design and will test every player in this tournament, many of whom may not have played there before.

Tee times, weather permitting, are from 09.30 and these are being donated by Elea Estate Golf Club who are, generously, making no charge to players or the Charity.’

The competition will be (AM-AM) teams of four, stableford format with two to score on each hole; play will be off yellow tees for men and red for ladies with a full handicap being used.

The main sponsor of the event is Peter Morton Removals of Paphos and there will be a trophy and individual prizes for the winning team.
Further individual prizes and gifts will be announced closer to the day with ‘nearest the pin’ on the Par 3 holes being popular, as well as the ‘longest drive’ on the long straight Par 4, 4th hole, which also has the dreaded – for this tournament – ‘Chairman’s Bunker’ forfeit sand-trap alongside.

Everything accruing from fees and forfeits will be banked as funds raised for the charity, as well as other generous sponsorship donations.

It is hoped to make this an annual event and plans are already laid to fit a more extensive tournament into the Elea calendar earlier in the year for 2018, avoiding the problems of bad weather.
