Clarkston, Mikaela Schulz winners at regional golf championship – The Oakland Press

FARMINGTON HILLS >> It was misty with temperatures in the 50s. Not exactly a perfect day for golf. But the competition was fierce in the girls golf regionals at Farmington Hills Golf Club on Thursday.

“It has been such a warm season this year I don’t think any of us that participated today were prepared for the rain and cold because it’s been so beautiful,’’ Clarkston coach Lezlie Hallman said. “It’s one of those circumstances that you do your best, you play through, you kind of shiver and try to stay warm.’’

Clarkston emerged as the top team with an accumulated score of 332 (the top four scores from each team are counted). Bloomfield Hills was second with 346 and Lake Orion third with 350.

Also, the three girls with the highest scores who are not on the top three teams will advance to the state finals: North Farmington’s Alana Jones (76), Lakeland’s Hannah Brown (87) and Rochester Adams’ Emma Ni (87).

The Clarkston girls were led by Claudia Sampson (77) and Ashley Liles (79) and also included Samantha Weber (87), Lauren Hartline (89) and Zoe Puskar (93).

“All the girls were playing phenomenal this year. I had some coming up from playing fourth and fifth. They’re good friends, and you know the competition is there but they united as a team and that’s what golf is. You’re looking for your best game but as a team we need to pull together and do our best,’’ Hallman said.

They finished fifth in the Oakland County championship several weeks ago.

Hallman said the first goal for states is to improve on last year when they finished seventh. Actually she’d like to see them crack the top five.

Mikaela Schulz was also the medalist at the Oakland County tournament.

“It was a rough day today I had a triple on the (par 4) second hole and then played pretty well after that,’’ Schulz said. “Just a rough day, I mean the course is in good condition considering how much rain we’ve gotten.”

She said it was misting when they teed off but that it didn’t affect her game.

“I wish I could have done a little better, just have to tune up some things in my game and prepare for states,’’ Schulz said.

The Bloomfield Hills team included: Mikaela Schulz (74), Lizzie Pierce (85), Sanju Swamy (91), Grace Wroldsen (96) and Nicole Grace (103).

Lake Orion’s golfers were Cameron Coltrin (77), Marissa Kovac (88), Ashley Yearwood (91), Devyn Goodman (94) and Jessie Fox (95).
