LUDHIANA: Khanna police have arrested an international kabaddi player and his friend for peddling 70 boxes of illegal liquor in his luxury vehicle. The accused was identified as Balraj Singh (46) of Jand village in Raikot, and Jaswinder Singh (30) of Latala village in Jodhan. Police officials said on a tip-off provided by an informer, a team of cops led by Jagjeevan Ram, in-charge of Court Complex police post, alerted the checkposts and also started checking suspicious vehicles near T-point Ghungraali at 10am on Saturday. They added that at around 11am, the team saw an Endeavour vehicle bearing registration number PB10BT-8659, coming from Bija side and stopped it for checking.

Cops said when the team asked the driver about his name, he identified himself as Balraj Singh, whereas the person sitting next to him was identified as Jaswinder Singh. They added that during the vehicle’s checking, police found 70 boxes of liquor in the vehicle. Police said the accused were asked to produce documents, if any, of the liquor in the vehicle, but they failed to do so. They added that the accused were taken into custody after that. Police booked the accused under various sections of Excise Act at Sadar Khanna police station, and started further action into the matter.

Station house officer (SHO), Sadar Khanna police station Vinod Kumar said the accused was an international kabaddi player who had played for India as well. He added that further details about his playing career would be known after further investigation into the matter. Police officials said during preliminary questioning, the accused told police they had bought the consignment from an unidentified person in Ambala at cheap rates and were to sell the same at higher prices.

Superintendent of police (SP) Investigation RPS Sandhu said even as the vehicle belongs to Balraj, still they are checking in whose name it was registered. He added that both the accused were into liquor smuggling, and they were checking whether they had cases against them. Police officials said Balraj was still playing kabaddi and went abroad, including Canada, to play the sport there.
