Liu Ying makes successful comeback in India – The Star Online

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Goh Liu Ying is back in the winner’s circle.

Yesterday, Liu Ying partnered Chen Tang Jie to win the mixed doubles crown at the India International Series in Hyderabad.

The fifth seeds scored a 21-19, 21-13 win over eighth seeds Rohan Kapoor-Kuhoo Garg of India in the fifth-tier tournament at the Pullela Gopichand Academy.

It was a successful comeback for Liu Ying. She was ruled out of action since suffering a shoulder injury while partnering Chan Peng Soon in their first-round loss at the Malaysian Open in April.

She then went for a surgery in May.

Before the injury, Liu Ying-Peng Soon were the silver medallists at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and second at the All-England in March this year.

The 28-year-old Liu Ying returned to training in October. She was then paired up with Tang Jie, the 2016 world junior bronze medallist.

Liu Ying was happy to taste success with her new partner.

“It’s just a small tournament but a good platform for me to get the competitive feeling again. I was able to move confidently. That’s good for my confidence,” said Liu Ying.

“It’s quite interesting to play with Tang Jie. I expect him to move like Peng Soon but that’s not being fair to him.

“I need to do my part to guide him. He lacks confidence but I’m sure he will get better with more exposure and experience.

“Overall, I’m just happy to be back to competition again. I’ve one more tournament before the year ends. Hopefully, it will prepare me to face stronger opponents next year,” she added.

Liu Ying-Tang Jie’s next assignment is the fourth-tier India International Challenge in Mumbai from Nov 29-Dec 3.
