WICKET: Anderson, Broad strike with second new ball

England have kept Australia quiet all the way towards the second new ball. And just when the second new ball is available, they have prised through. Anderson gets Paine nicking behind while Starch gets a leading edge back to Broad. England doing this superbly here.

Not many runs but an intriguing contest

Smith being tested

He’s not got too many easy runs this morning. As England wait for the second new ball, they are currently trying to get to Smith’s throat with a string of short balls by Woakes and Ball. The field is set for that too. Smith’s handling them well so far.

WICKET: Broad bags Marsh

Big wicket for England early in the day. They’ve worked out a good plan on this pitch and Marsh falls into the trap. Kevin Pietersen, sharp as ever in the comm box, picks the field for a slower one coming and he gets it spot on. A slight cutter from Broad, on a full length sees the ball stopping on Marsh. He ends up chipping a drive straight to mid off.

FIFTY FOR MARSH

All those selection quibbles are being broken down one by one. First it was Vince and Stoneman for England. Now it’s Marsh with a back-against-the-wall fifty. But his job is not done yet. Australia need a big score from him or Smith.

Prelude

Hello and welcome. The action on day 3 promises to be a lot of fun. As of now, it looks like it’s Australia who have the advantage in this tug of war. That’s mainly due to the presence of Steve Smith still in the middle. He’s been well supported by Shaun Marsh too. But these two will have to ensure that Australia get the most of that 131-run deficit to grab a clear advantage. Let’s wait and see how that pans out. England will come all guns blazing in that first hour, at least.
