Mitchell McClenaghan, the New Zealand paceman, has signed with Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Sydney Thunder after a starring performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year.
In August, the left-armer gave up his New Zealand central contract in a bid to play in lucrative Twenty20 competitions around the world. McClenaghan claimed 112 wickets across 76 Twenty20 and One-Day Internationals from 2012-16.
Earlier in the year, the 31-year-old starred in the IPL with 19 wickets for Mumbai Indians to be one of the tournament’s leading wicket takers. McClenaghan played in the recent Caribbean Premier League season and will represent Durban Qalanders in the new T20 Global League in South Africa.
The addition of McClenaghan adds another component to a dangerous Thunder attack already boasting star quick Pat Cummins, veteran Clint McKay, Gurinder Sandhu, spinner Fawad Ahmed and allrounder Shane Watson.
McClenaghan said he was excited about playing for the Thunder, who claimed the BBL title in 2015-16. “I spent some time at the St Lucia Stars with Shane Watson and got to know his outlook on the game and hear his passion for Sydney Thunder and the organisation,” he said. “I grew up in Australia and watched a lot of Aussie cricket and to have the opportunity to play in the Big Bash is something I’m really looking forward to. The Big Bash is a fantastic spectacle, the atmosphere is amazing and skill levels are incredible.”
Mike Hussey, the Thunder’s director of cricket, said McClenaghan would provide a veteran presence. “The club identified the need for a frontline bowler as a top priority for the season,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing Mitch in action for the Thunder, he’s a bowler with experience playing in high pressured games at both domestic and international level.
“We’ve been monitoring his situation with New Zealand Cricket and are pleased to be able to bring him to the Big Bash for the summer,” added.
