GURUGRAM: A senior PDW engineer on Friday refuted the allegations of Indian kabaddi women’s team coach Sunil Dabas that she was attacked by a group of men near her housing society late on Wednesday night.
Jitender Mittal, the senior engineer, further claimed that it was Dabas who had attacked labourers, hired by a PWD-empanelled contractor engaged in construction of a justice tower on a nearby plot.
On Thursday, Dabas lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that a group of men in a car tried mow her down in front of her housing society at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, a stone throw from the mini secretariat near Gurgaon district court. In her complaint, Dabas said that she was attacked as she had protested when the driver of a dumper broke the main gate of the society while trying to dispose waste inside the compound. She was later taken to hospital, where she was admitted with bruises and high blood pressure.
However, Mittal denied the allegation that the contractor’s men had attempted to assault Dabas. He said the labourers had come to dump earth dug up for the construction of the justice tower. Also, the gate was damaged accidentally when the dumper was trying to enter the compound.
“Work on the justice tower is going on a nearby plot and there is no place to dump dug up earth, which is why the contractor is using a vacant forest department’s plot located inside the society. The plot, where the tower is coming up, used to be a parking place for lawyers of the district court. Since construction began, the lawyers started using the said forest department land as an alternate parking,” Mittal said. If Dabas had any problem with the contractor’s men, she should have informed the authorities, he added.
The PWD engineer also said that Dabas had earlier too stopped the contractor from using the forest department plot.
The matter had already been reported to the Gurgaon deputy commissioner.
Countering Mittal’s claims, Dabas said if the PWD engineer had already identified the men who tried to kill her, he should reveal the details to the police.
“If PWD officials are defending the assaulters, they should also be held responsible for the crime,” she said on Friday.
Inspector Rajpal, SHO of Shivaji Nagar police station, said the police were corroborating Dabas’ allegations and questioning eyewitnesses. He, however, refused to divulge any name. No one has been arrested so far, he added.
Meanwhile, the deputy director of Krishi Kalyan Kendra has filed a complaint with the police against unknown men for damaging the society gate.
Deputy commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh could not be reached for comments despite repeated attempts.
