Daniel Christian’s entry in the Australian T20I side was much awaited. The experienced all-rounder has been enjoying a great year in T20 franchise cricket. He ended up as runners-up for Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in the IPL 2017. Following that he helped Nottinghamshire win the NatWest Blast T20 and then enjoyed another triumph with Trinbago Knight Riders (TKK) in CPL.
Christian was expected to boost the Australian scoring in the death overs but he was denied the opportunity. First the Indian bowlers kept it their line tight. He had got only 8 from the first 12 balls. In the start of the 19th over, he whacked Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the mid-on region and called for 2.
But then it’s not a very smart thing to do when you challenge Virat Kohli’s arms. He is amongst the best in the world. Patrolling the long-on boundary, Kohli effected a brilliant throw. Christian was almost in but Kohli, almost from deep midwicket region, executed a direct-hit.
Christian’s wicket was Australia’s eighth to fall. Soon it began raining and the play was halted with Australia 118 for 8 in the 19th over. India eventually chased down the revised target of 48 under 6 overs. Ironically, to add more salt to the woes, it was Kohli who scored the winning runs off Christian as he drove through extra cover for a boundary.
